DARSHANI PERSADH
As a woman in the tech space, have you encountered any unique challenges or opportunities that have shaped your approach to problem-solving and innovation?
As a woman in the tech industry, I’ve encountered my fair share of unique challenges, but I’ve always seen them as opportunities to grow and innovate. One challenge that stands out is navigating the male-dominated environment. It pushed me to be more assertive, confident, and creative in my problem-solving approach. Being a minority in the field has actually fueled my determination to break barriers and contribute to a more inclusive and diverse tech landscape by showcasing advanced technology leadership by blending business insight with inventive strategies.
Today, in the same male-dominated environment, I have emerged as a recognized thought leader through invitations to influential industry forums, where I highlight the significance of digital capacities to a broader audience.
Collaborating closely with senior leaders, I facilitate the integration of digital experiences across my organizations, spanning their digital ecosystems, services, and products.
I champion digital innovation to drive solutions with a positive impact, promote sustainable practices (ESG), and foster a more diverse and inclusive environment for women in the technology sector.
Can you share a project or achievement you’re particularly proud of and how it has contributed to your personal and professional growth?
On a positive note, a male business colleague, whom I have the utmost respect for, believes I subscribe fully to the philosophy of Conscious Capitalism, and Yes, I am proud of the CSR projects I choose to drive forward. Being a conscious capitalist is deeply rooted in my values and approach to business. It’s about recognizing that we have a responsibility not only to create value for our stakeholders but also to contribute positively to society and the environment. This perspective aligns perfectly with my role at DARJYO and my broader vision for the tech industry.
First and foremost, I take pride in our commitment to creating products and technologies that have a meaningful impact. At DARJYO, we’re not just focused on profit; we’re dedicated to developing solutions that address real-world challenges and improve people’s lives. Whether it’s enhancing sustainability, promoting social equality, or driving innovation, we always strive to make a positive difference.
Another aspect that brings me pride is our emphasis on ethical business practices. We prioritize transparency, integrity, and fairness in all our dealings. By fostering a culture of trust and respect, we create a conducive environment for collaboration and long-term success.
Furthermore, I take sustainability seriously. I am deeply committed to minimizing my environmental footprint and maximizing the positive impact we can have on our planet. This involves integrating eco-friendly practices into DARJYO’s operations, supporting green initiatives, and advocating for environmentally responsible policies within the tech industry.
Ultimately, embracing conscious capitalism allows me to contribute to a more holistic and purpose-driven form of business. It’s about recognizing that profit is just one aspect of success and that our actions can ripple out to create lasting benefits for society, the environment, and the industry as a whole. This approach not only brings me a sense of pride but also fuels my motivation to continue pushing for positive change in the tech world.
Mentorship can play a crucial role in one’s career. Have you had any mentors or role models in the tech industry who have influenced your growth? How did they impact your professional journey?
Ah, the evolution of mentorship, what a journey it has been! Back in the day, I was fortunate to have some amazing male mentors who guided me through the labyrinth of the tech world. They shared invaluable insights, taught me the ropes, and showed me how to navigate the often-murky waters of the industry.
As I’ve grown and evolved in my tech career, I’ve found a whole new level of inspiration from female mentors. These fierce, trailblazing women have added a refreshing perspective to my journey. They’ve shown me that you can absolutely rock the tech world while being unapologetically yourself.
Drawing inspiration from female mentors has been like discovering a treasure trove of wisdom, resilience, and innovation. They’ve shattered glass ceilings, defied stereotypes, and paved the way for us to thrive in this dynamic landscape. Their stories of overcoming challenges, juggling responsibilities, and turning setbacks into opportunities have resonated with me on a whole new level.
What’s truly remarkable is the sense of camaraderie and empowerment that comes from connecting with female mentors. It’s like being part of this incredible sisterhood where we lift each other up, celebrate each other’s successes, and lend a hand when the going gets tough. There’s a unique bond that forms when you share similar experiences and aspirations, and it’s been incredibly motivating to have that network of support.
So, while my male mentors provided an essential foundation, my female mentors have added layers of depth and richness to my journey. They’ve shown me the art of balancing ambition with authenticity, and the power of breaking barriers with grace. It’s like a tech evolution – from learning the ropes to rewriting the rulebook – and I couldn’t be more excited about where this journey is taking me.
The tech industry can sometimes be fast-paced and demanding. How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance and ensure your well-being while pursuing your career in technology?
Is there an effective work/life balance? Some days I wake up early, ready to own the day and start work at 8 am. I power through the day filled with motivation and before I know it, I’m still working at 12 pm
Other days I get up late or have some errands to run in the morning. I start work later at 10am. Then by 3 pm. I’m mentally checked out. I will admit to being lazy but, I’ve learned that setting clear boundaries and prioritizing self-care is non-negotiable.
Through self-discipline; prioritizing quality time with loved ones, regular exercise and meditation are essential parts of my routine.
Additionally, delegating tasks and empowering my team has not only improved our collective efficiency but also allowed me to recharge and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
Many young girls and women may be hesitant to pursue a career in tech due to societal stereotypes or lack of representation. What advice would you give to someone who is interested in entering the tech field but is unsure about taking that step?
To all the aspiring women considering a tech career, I want to say don’t let stereotypes or doubts hold you back.
Overcome your imposter syndrome, don’t get brainwashed into believing that you are inadequate or incapable despite being successful at a job in hand.
Embrace your passion and curiosity, and know that your unique perspective is a valuable asset.
Surround yourself with supportive communities, both online and offline, where you can connect with like-minded women champions and allies to continuously promote and inspire you to reach your full potential in the tech industry
Seek out mentors and role models who have walked the path before you and can provide guidance and inspiration.
The tech industry is evolving, and there’s a place for everyone who is willing to contribute and make a difference. The work doesn’t just end at encouraging young girls to opt for STEM careers, but also empowering women in STEM to periodically upskill themselves and move towards successful career journeys.
It is well known that tech (and its related industries) are male dominated but there has been a shift in recent years. While a gender imbalance still exists, more and more women are successfully entering the tech industry.
Dare to be fearless! Scale your dreams! Fail fast! so you can get right back up to knock down more walls.
We have so many talented women in the tech community who play a vital role in achieving the highest levels of digital maturity and unless we recognize this, helping women to accelerate their careers in tech with a seamless approach to upskilling will remain stagnant.
I’ve learned that sometimes taking risks and stepping outside of our comfort zones can lead to the most incredible opportunities and personal growth. It’s about trusting in yourself, following your instincts, and having the courage to chase your dreams.
Remember, demonstrate a clear passion for technology, pay it forward and help other Women in Tech.
I hope my experiences and advice inspire you to embark on an exciting journey!
